Summer starts here.
Kitsap Regional Library has always had a strong summer reading tradition for kids and teens. In 2014, the priority of this program shifted to include learning. In 2015, it shifted again to include adults. Up to this point the library had always partnered with the Collaborative Summer Reading Program to provide the marketing materials needed for a successful summer. The problem? The materials were branded to the program and did not further the visibility of Kitsap Regional Library in the community. With the launch of a new brand for the library, and the added complexity of a new adult audience, it was time to reevaluate the approach to summer.
In 2015, Kitsap Regional Library launched "Summer starts here." To get staff excited they were asked to be a part of the process, helping to develop the theme. Teen advisory groups and kids were asked to give input as well, allowing us to further refine materials. The result? In 2015 the library experienced participation in record numbers with adult participation doubling what we anticipated. Kids and teens who read 100 hours -our most dedicated level of participation- increased 60% over the previous year. In Kitsap, the library really is the place where summer starts for kids, teens and adults of all ages.
